Leaded Glass Window

Difficulty level =

Two leaded glass windows recovered from my daughter's early 1900s remodeled house. The windows were covered by interior sheetrock and were discovered at the time of demolition. One window was badly damaged and both had decades of several layers of paint.

The glass was removed from the frames, the frames stripped and sanded to the extent possible. One of the leaded panes was repairable but the other had to be completely reassembled. I had never worked with leaded glass before. New lead strip was purchased and some of the pieces of glass had to be recut.

I had some previous experience soldering electronics but soldering larger elements took a bit of practice. The restored leaded panels were replaced in the restored frames. The restored windows now grace either side of my daughter's fireplace.

Frame after glass was removed. Paint stripper doesn't work like it used to.
Heavy sanding and wood repair required. Finished painted frames.
Glass cut and laid out Some breakage during reassembly.
Nails kept the pieces in place. Soldering takes skill and practice.
Glass pieces soldered in place. Now putty is applied.
Finished panels... ... ready for delivery and installation.
