Hallicrafters Short Wave Radio

Difficulty level =

This project was to restore an WWII era Hallicrafters short wave radio. This radio was in the possession of my cousin Holly in Southern California, but before that it was owned by my grandfather. As a kid when we would spend a week each summer in Santa Monica, I would spend hours listening to broadcasts from all over the world on this radio. My cousin had it in his garage for decades before handing it off to me.

I removed and restored the case with a hammered finish, de-greased the chassis and soldered in new replacement capacitors replacing the old paper capacitors. It worked remarkably well, but unfortunately Short Wave radio has fallen victim to the internet age. Internet radio has replaced most short wave stations leaving little to listen to today. Still there are some stations still out there broadcasting.

The scary part was connecting up a short wave antenna on the roof. That's a two-story house and a long way down if one isn't careful.
New capacitors: Cleaned up faceplate:
New aluminum paint. Rust-Oleum makes a hammered finish paint.
Fixing one end of the short wave "wire" antenna. Don't drop those pliers.
